Dental implants are a durable, natural-looking solution for missing teeth. Implants are made from biocompatible titanium in the form of tooth roots that are permanently attached to your jawbone, so they function and look just like natural teeth. Dental implants also help preserve facial structure, preventing bone deterioration that occurs when teeth are missing. They are a superior restoration to the conventional bridge, which uses the adjacent teeth to support the missing tooth. By placing an implant instead of a bridge, you preserve the adjacent teeth from being prepared for crowns, and by keeping teeth separated, you allow flossing and better hygiene. A dental implant is the ideal treatment choice to replace a missing tooth.
People who have one or more missing teeth can benefit from dental implants. You might need a dental implant if you have tooth loss due to:
Dental implants can improve speech and chewing ability.
Enhance the appearance of your smile.
Secure permanent or removable bridges and dentures.
Provide teeth replacement without altering (shaving down) your neighboring teeth. (This is necessary for dental bridges.)
In addition, dental implants can’t get cavities. (But they’re not invulnerable to gum disease, so it’s still important to practice good oral hygiene.)
The process of getting implants requires a number of visits spread over several months. The first visit involves evaluating the space and bone available for the implant. X-rays, 3D scans, and impressions of your mouth are taken of the jaw and teeth to determine the bone, gum tissue, and spacing available for an implant. We routinely take a 3D scan to more accurately evaluate the recipient site. The implant will be surgically placed into the jawbone and allowed to heal for 3 to 6 months, depending on the quality of the bone. Once the implant has healed and has fused with the bone, a beautiful, natural-looking crown will be attached on top of the implant. You will receive instructions for care when your treatment is completed. Good oral hygiene, eating habits, and regular dental visits will aid in the life of your new implant.
